You must have a valid Washington State electrical certificate or license to do electrical work in Washington State.

The list & links below call out information about the requirements, the process and the fees for getting or renewing your electrical certificate or license.

Trainee – The first step to becoming an electrician.  Electrical trainees must have a trainee certificate and work under the supervision of a Washington certified electrician.

Electrician – A certified journeyman or specialty electrician must have the specified requirement of time-in-trade, education and pass the appropriate exam.

Electrical administrator – An electrical administrator must pass the administrator exam.  Electrical administrators make certain that the work of the electrical contractor is compliant with the electrical laws and rules of the State of Washington. An administrator is not qualified as an installer in the electrical trade.

Telecommunications administrator – A  telecommunications administrator must pass a qualifying exam. Telecommunication administrators ensure that the telecommunications contractor’s electrical work complies with electrical laws and rules od Washington State.

Electrical contractor – If you plan to do electrical work in Washington, you must get an electrical contractor license from L&I, and submit the required bond or assignment of savings. A master electrician or electrical administrator must be designated to ensure that electrical work is in compliance  with the laws and rules of the State of Washington.

Telecommunications contractor – Engaging in the business of doing telecommunications work means that you must get a telecommunications contractor license from WA L&I, submit the required bond or assignment of savings and get the required insurance. A telecommunications electrical administrator must be designated to be sure that telecom work complies with Washington laws and rules.

Master electrician’s certificateTo be a master electrician, you are required to have the required amount of experience as an electrician, as well as pass the Master’s exam.  Master electricians are certified to act as an administrator as well as work with the tools of the trade as an installer.
